The September 11th attack was a sudden shock with widespread industry and consumer ripple effects concerning safety. As consumer demand for travel rebounds domestically, how do lingering global travel restrictions impact the future of aviation? Already we have seen plans to halt production for long-haul planes like the Boeing 747 and Airbus A380. If the demand for long-haul remains low, what impact does this have on existing maintenance and support infrastructure? One impact of COVID-19 has been a 40% reduction in active global aviation MRO services. Earlier in 2020, it was forecast that 17,000 aircraft were parked and not in service due to COVID-19 according to the BBC. Carriers need to innovate on their existing infrastructure to meet the shifting post-COVID demand and flight routes.
Aircraft sitting in storage require increasing levels of supervision to return to operating status as time goes on. From maintenance errors and out of practice pilots, to nests of insects blocking circuitry and sensors, resuming flight operations will require diligent oversight, and with an already dwindling MRO infrastructure, a deficit for throughput capacity is likely for airlines. Forecasting returning flights efficiently is a significant hurdle to overcome. Post-COVID, airlines would benefit from utilizing AI-driven forecasting tools to help manage the operational challenges of bringing planes back to service.
